South Goa District Collector Swapnil Naik and other officials all descended at the historic Lohia Maidan, Margao, on Friday to oversee arrangements ahead of Goa Revolution Day programme on June 18.

 But about 13 kms away from at Assolna village, the Lohia Chowk named after the great Indian Nationalist Dr Ram Manohar Lohia is lying in shambles and craving for attention. When The Goan visited the site at Assolna on Friday on the eve of Revolution Day, it was greeted by a garbage mound right on the side of the memorial and the surroundings. The area is also a resting place for stray cattle. That none of the authorities have taken cognizance of the state of affairs of Lohia Chowk is evident from the fact that crumbling marble plates have neither been replaced nor repaired till date. When The Goan contacted Assolna Sarpanch Pedrina Cardozo to shed light on the maintenance of the chowk, she was quick to point fingers at the district administration for its upkeep and maintenance. “The panchayat has no role to play in the maintenance of the Lohia Chowk.
