The district authorities have finally stepped in to stop all ongoing road digging sewerage works underway in the commercial capital, with Deputy Collector, Margao, Ajit Panchwadkar directing JICA officials and the contractor to stop the work till January 1.

Panchwadkar further directed JICA and the contractor to restore the damaged roads and black top them within three days.

The Deputy Collector told the media after a meeting with the Executive Engineer, monitoring JICA sewerage works in the city, Mr Jadhav, Traffic PI Mohan Gawde, PSI Amin Naik and other officials on Friday evening that road digging work in the city was ordered to be stopped from Friday.

The decision comes against the backdrop of complaints received from the Christmas shoppers as well as market traders and the report dispatched by the Margao traffic PI Mohan Gawde to stop the road digging activity in view of the ensuing Christmas season. “I have told JICA officials and the contractor to temporarily stop the work till January 1, which they have agreed. They have also promised to restore the damaged roads within three days, including the manholes. The restoration work would include soling and blacktopping," Panchwadkar said, while saying that he has asked for a detailed report from JICA and the contractor by 10 am on Saturday on the restoration of roads.
