Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Goa, has strongly condemned derogatory remarks reportedly made against St Francis Xavier, calling them hurtful and a threat to Goa’s long-standing communal harmony.
In a press release, JIH Goa said the comments had deeply offended the Christian community and undermined the spirit of mutual respect that defines the state’s pluralistic fabric. The organisation stressed that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right under the Constitution, it cannot be misused to insult or demean religious figures or beliefs held sacred by any community.
JIH Goa President Asif Hussain stated that irresponsible use of free speech to make derogatory remarks reflects a disregard for the values of coexistence and mutual respect. He noted that the remarks were particularly concerning as they were made during an event commemorating a revered saint, in the presence of public representatives entrusted with upholding dignity and harmony.
The organisation urged event organisers to ensure that speakers adhere to principles of restraint and responsibility, especially on platforms associated with cultural or spiritual observances. It warned against the misuse of such platforms to spread divisive rhetoric.
Highlighting Goa’s legacy of peaceful coexistence, JIH Goa called on the state government and authorities to take prompt legal action to address the issue and prevent any disruption of social harmony.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and unity, the organisation appealed to all communities to remain calm and work collectively to preserve the state’s communal harmony.
