Former GPCC Vice-President and Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Wednesday said he had to take the harsh decision of quitting the Congress party for the sake of his voters and the development of the Mormugao constituency.
Speaking to reporters, Amonkar said he had taken the decision after consulting all his voters and well-wishers, adding that he had also conveyed his decision to the Congress party.
"I faced defeat on two occasions since 2012 and finally won in 2022. This was possible because of the faith and trust reposed in me by my supporters, who stood even stronger this time despite having lost two elections.”
“After I won, I noticed the pain and difficulties faced by my people in the last six months as opposition MLA because I could not get their work done. This is when I spoke to all my well-wishers and supporters and consulted the people. I feel extremely hurt that I cannot be of any help to them without being in power.”
“Finally, all my supporters said I must take the decision to join the BJP, if the constituency has to develop and works have to be done. I have joined the BJP unconditionally after consulting the people only for the sake of development and for my supporters," said Amonkar.
“I am thankful to the Congress party as well and I informed them about my decision and the reason for the decision, because finally I have to take care of my constituency. I offered prayers at all religious places before I came to my constituency office to start a new phase of my political career," said Amonkar.
Amonkar said his main priority of development after joining the BJP was to take up a hospital in Mormugao Constituency, restore the Mormugao fort, resolve water supply issues besides offering employment to people of the constituency.
"It is sad I had to take a harsh decision to quit the Congress after dedicating 25 years to the party but this decision is not for me and it is only for the sake of my people,” said Amonkar.
