In a bid to ensure that bio-medical waste is channelized to the waste treatment facility at the Kundaim Industrial Estate, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to call a joint meeting with the IMA, Margao unit, and the agency approved by the Goa State Pollution Control Board to treat the bio-medical waste.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that the joint meeting of the IMA, Margao, and the GSPCB-appointed agency to handle bio-medical waste will be called to ensure that the two parties sit together and work out a system wherein bio-medical waste generated at the health care institutions in the commercial capital finds its way to the treatment plant at Kundaim.
“The MMC will be the facilitator of the meeting between the IMA representatives and the bio-medical waste treatment agency. They will have to put a mechanism in place wherein bio-medical waste generated in the city is systematically collected and transported to the waste handling site at Kundaim,” Agnelo added.
He, however, made it clear that the MMC will stop collecting bio-medical waste or bio-medical waste mixed with solid wet waste from the healthcare institutions.
Fears have been expressed in certain quarters that the biomedical waste may find its way to open spaces unless a mechanism is put in place wherein it is collected and transported to the disposal facility at Kundaim.
