The Rani Chenamma University (RCU) Vice Chancellor Dr Ramachandra Gowda has said Kannada language will not be compulsory for students from other states, including Goa and Maharashtra, to pursue higher education in the university.
Speaking to media persons in Belagavi, Dr Gowda said students would be trained in working knowledge of the language. The university began admissions for the new academic year from Tuesday.
“The National Education Policy (NEP) has remained unchanged since the past 34 years. RCU has introduced the NEP-2020 from the current academic year and since Belagavi is located at the border with Goa and Maharashtra, students taking admission from these states would be trained in the working language of Kannada,” said Dr Gowda.
Karnataka is the first state where the new NEP is being implemented and RCU has simultaneously implemented the same at 398 affiliated colleges of the university.
The new syllabus is being prepared and will be made available for students as classes begin in October.
“From this current year onwards, students have to choose between two discipline cores available at the respective colleges for their graduation,” Dr Gowda said.
“A student who quit after undergraduate programme following the first year will be given a certificate, students who quit after two years will be given a diploma and students on completing three years will be given degree. Students who complete four years will be awarded with an ‘Honours Degree’,” he added.
RCU Registrar Prof Basavaraj Padmashali, Valuation Registrar Prof. SM Hurakadli and Finance Officer D N Patil were present at the news conference.
