Karnataka excise sleuths seized an empty fish lorry illegally transporting different types of Goa liquor worth Rs 9 lakh at the Majali check post, a few metres from Goa's Polem check post, in the wee hours of Tuesday. This is the third seizure of Goa liquor at the Majali check post in the last 4 months.
According to reports, the Andhra Pradesh registered truck (AP-37-TD-9855) was returning after delivering a fish consignment in Goa, when it was intercepted by Karnataka Excise sleuths at Majali check post after having crossed Goa's border at Polem.
Karnataka Excise Sub Inspector at Majali check-post R N Naik told media persons that they received reliable inputs that liquor was being illegally transported across the Majali check post.
“At about 2.30 am on Tuesday, we noticed a fish lorry with empty fish crates at the Majali check post. On close scrutiny, we found liquor boxes neatly concealed inside the empty fish-crates. The liquor is worth Rs 4.50 lakh in Goa, but is valued at Rs 9 lakh in Karnataka, given the higher price of liquor here in Karnataka,” said Naik.
“The lorry, empty fish crates and all boxes of liquor have been seized while the lorry driver has been taken into custody,” he added.
A social activist from the locality expressed concern that huge amounts of liquor was crossing
Goa’s border, only to be intercepted at Karnataka’s Majali check post, barely 100 metres away.
This is the third such seizure of Goan liquor to have cross Polem check post and seized at the Majali check post.
On December 1, 2020, sleuths at Majali check post had intercepted a Karnataka registered truck and had seized liquor worth Rs 2.3 lakh concealed under iron blocks in the truck. Earlier, a car was detained and liquor worth Rs 1.64 lakh were seized from the vehicle.
