As usual, the North Goa District Road Safety Committee held its annual routine meeting and formed a special monitoring cell to undertake inspections and tackle safety issues at the entrance and exit of the KTC bus-stand at Mapusa.
But several such inspections and recommendations made in the past have yielded no result.
Last year, during an inspection by various government departments it was found that part of the compound wall at the entry point of the Mapusa bus-stand acted as hindrance for smooth movement of buses and therefore recommended to be demolished.
But one year down the line, the wall still stands tall, as the department concerned has failed to act on the recommendation.
Similarly, it was observed that two huge gates at the entry and exit points of the bus-stand are never used and acted more as a hindrance and an eyesore and therefore suggested to be removed.
In this case too, there has been no proactive response.
The uneven surface of the road at the entry and the exit point of the bus-stand also speak volume on upkeep of the bus-stand.
The blank pay parking board is a testimony that although pay parking fees are collected from consumers, the rates have not been displayed.
GOACAN co-ordinator, Roland Martins informed that there has to be a system of compliance and penalty when department officials concerned fail to comply with the recommendations.
“Some sort of accountability has to come into the system. If the department concerned fails to comply with the recommendations, then officials concerned need to own up,” Martins said.
He disclosed several other departments have taken proactive action on the recommendation made by the road safety committee.
He said soon after the inspection last year, the FDA had issued notices to more than a dozen retail outlets within the bus-stand for failing to comply with various provisions under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Similarly, he said, the urban health centre and the Mapusa Municipal Council had also taken action on the recommendations.
