Khaunte flays govt over traffic woes in Porvorim

Reiterating that he is not against construction of the third Mandovi bridge, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has accused the government of failing to take steps to ease traffic congestion at Porvorim.
Addressing a function after laying the foundation stone for development of a park at Krantinagar in Porvorim, Khaunte said he was disturbed with the problems the commuters are facing due to traffic congestion in Porvorim.
Speaking further, Khaunte said traffic congestion has become a regular affair at Porvorim and the worst sufferers are residents of Porvorim who are required to go to Panaji frequently.
“I had requested the State government not to allow heavy vehicles through Porvorim during the day, but to divert them from Amona. I had also requested the government to open waterways and introduce ferry service at Malim, as a jetty already exists there.”
“These measures would definitely have eased traffic congestion at Porvorim, but the government has not taken any steps in this direction,” said Khaunte.
Khaunte said the unique park at Krantinagar, which is being developed under ‘FRANCIS’ scheme of the government will be an attraction of Porvorim.
“This Project will cater to needs of people of all age groups. It will be ideal to call this park as 'Nana-Nani-Natwande Park',” he added.
“The estimated cost of the project was Rs 5.30 crore. However, since this amount did not fit in the parameters of the ‘FRANCIS’ scheme, the project was bifurcated into two phases. The estimated cost of first phase is Rs 3.34 crore and the work of second phase will start after completion of first phase. The revenue generated from the food court will be utilized for the maintenance of the park,” informed Khaunte.
Goa State Urban Development Agency vice-chairman Sudhir Kandolkar said this is a unique project the GSUDA has undertaken. “There is no dearth of funds and GSUDA will endeavour to complete the project within 18 months,” said Kandolkar.
