A large tree has fallen dangerously along the roadside near Khotorde village in Sattari taluka, posing a serious threat to motorists, two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. A substantial portion of the tree is leaning towards the road, while several branches have extended into the traffic lane, raising fears of a major accident.
A motorist travelling along the route recently reported a narrow escape after his vehicle came dangerously close to the fallen tree. According to the driver, the car narrowly avoided a collision while passing through the affected stretch. Had the vehicle moved slightly closer to the edge of the road, it could have struck the tree, potentially resulting in serious or even fatal consequences.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who said that heavy monsoon rainfall, soil erosion and strong winds have weakened several roadside trees in the area. The tree near Khotorde is believed to have fallen due to the adverse weather conditions, although the exact cause has not been officially confirmed.
Residents have urged the Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department, Electricity Department and local administration to immediately inspect the site and remove the fallen tree. They have also called for an inspection of other vulnerable trees in the vicinity and preventive action to avoid similar incidents.
The affected road is used daily by school buses, private vehicles, motorcycles, farmers and local residents. The obstruction poses an even greater danger at night and during heavy rainfall, when poor visibility could prevent motorists from noticing the hazard in time.
Residents have called for temporary warning signs, barricades and traffic-control measures until the tree is completely cleared from the roadside.
“No one should lose their life because of this tree. The concerned departments must act immediately, remove the obstruction and make the road safe for everyone,” residents said.
The issue has also drawn attention on social media, with citizens urging the authorities to respond without delay. Locals said the incident should be treated as a serious road-safety concern and immediate action taken before a tragedy occurs.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for regular inspection of roadside trees, timely pruning of dangerous branches, increased monitoring during the monsoon and a faster emergency response mechanism to prevent accidents across Sattari taluka.
