Kidney transplant done in Belagavi

BELAGAVI: Doctors at the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital here have saved the life of a 14-year-old boy after successfully transplanting the kidney. The transplant for the first time in north Karnataka and Goa region and has brought hope in similar cases in the region.

Medical Director and CEO of the hospital Dr M V Jali said the boy is the son of a farmer and was suffering from Alport’s Syndrome “ a rare genetic disorder related with the chromosomes mainly affecting the males. He was diagnosed with Alports Syndrome in 2013, and lately he started complaining of pains with trouble in urinating. "We planned for pre-emptive kidney transplantation (without undergoing dialysis) after which he is very stable,” Dr Jali added.

Nephrologist Dr R B Nerli, performed the transplant with Dr Mahantesh Patil. He said the procedure offers better long-term survival apart from psychological and financial benefits compared with transplant performed after dialysis.

Dr Nerli said the boy's mother donated her kidney to the child as first blood relations can legally donate it.
