Konkani identity must be preserved, says Congress

PANAJI

Congress leader Amarnath Panjikar on Sunday said Konkani, the official language of the State, should  be used for official work and should be promoted through multiple platforms.

February 4 is celebrated in Goa as ‘Official Language Day’ and Panjikar said the movement launched by Konkani lovers back in the 1980s helped the language get the identity.

Panjikar in a statement claimed that it was former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who advised Goans to first decide the official  language  which will be the criteria for Statehood.

Accordingly, soon after Goa adopted Konkani as the official language through a bill in the Legislative Assembly on February 4, 1987, the State was granted Statehood on May 30 that year, he said, adding that it is now a duty preserve and promote the Konkani language.
