PANAJI
The situation at Kadamba bus terminus in Panaji was tense on Thursday morning following a bitter tussle between KTC staffers and private bus operators whose buses ply on Panaji-Ponda route.
At the core of the issue was the clash of timings and the short gap between the stops of KTC and private buses, which inadvertently results in loss of passengers to the bus which arrives later at a stop.
The issue was triggered after a private bus owner and driver stopped a Kadamba bus at Old Goa and threatened the physical safety of the KTC driver and conductor. Immediately after this incident, the Kadamba driver, one Baptista, approached KTC drivers' union leader Sundar Jalmi.
Jalmi allegedly caught the private bus driver Sainath Naik upon his arrival at Panaji bus stand and along with a few other KTC staffers, assaulted him as well as his conductor Kalesh Shirodkar.
Infuriated, private bus owners and drivers operating along the Panaji-Ponda route visited Panaji Police station and the RTO office at Junta House seeking permanent resolution.
Speaking to the media at KTC stand in Panaji, Jalmi stated, "We are harassed by these private bus owners. We have brought the matter to the attention of KTC management. But if private bus owners do not stop troubling us, we will call for an all Goa protest of all KTC staffers."
Panaji Police have registered a non-cognizable offence based on the complaint filed by the private bus
owners.
