Labour leader pegs pandemic job losses at 25K, plans stir

PANAJI

Goa's top labour rights leader Christopher Fonseca has pegged job losses in the last 18 months due to the economic backlash of the pandemic at roughly twenty-five thousand and has called for a stir by the working class on August 25.

Several companies and service establishments have either shut shop or have retrenched workers during the last 18 months, Fonseca said, adding that day-to-day living has become an uphill task for working people in Goa.

"Workers' job security and service conditions are at great risk now than ever before," he said.

He said, workmen will stage a demonstration on August 25 at the Azad Maidan where the pro-Corporate and anit-workmen, anti-people policies pursued by the NDA government due to its brute majority in Parliament will also be highlighted.

Fonseca said several local government failures related to settling wage and other incentives of workmen from the KTC, Flotilla staff of the River Navigation Department and PWD's Labour Supply Society among others was another reason for resorting to the stir.
