Church representatives object to stones being put in property

Land survey team begins demarcation  of land for burial purposes at Sonsodo

The demarcation exercise underway at Sonsodo to ascertain the land acquired for the burial grounds at the site.

Land survey officers descended at Sonsodo for the demarcation of the land acquired for the burial grounds for all the three religious communities, including Kabrastan.

Representatives of the Raia Church and others told the  media that they have no objection to the demarcation exercise, but made it abundantly clear that they would not allow the team to put stones in their property.

A large posse of policemen from the Fatorda Police station was posted at the site as a precautionary measure. 

Engineers of the Margao Municipal Council, besides the president of the Raia Church fabrica William Barretto, Camurlim Sarpanch Basil Fernandes, besides representative of St Joaquim Chapel Borda, Pascoal Norohna were present during the demarcation exercise.

The surveyor Srikrishna Sawant told the media that the team has come to demarcate the area acquired for the burial grounds. When asked whether the team has been permitted to put the stones in the property, Sawant referred to the police presence at the site, indicating the exercise will be carried out with police protection.

Pascoal Norohna pointed out to the survey officers to submit a plan to the St Joaquim Chapel committee after completing the exercise and a copy to the Raia Church. “We have not come here to object to the demarcation but to help and ensure the process is completed without any issue”, he said.

Raia Fabrica president William Baretto told the media that he has come to the spot as the survey team has come back to conduct the demarcation. 

“We have  no objection to the demarcation, but we have told the team not to place the stones in our property”, he added.
