Around three constables of the Maina Curtorim police sustained injuries in stone throwing when they tried to keep the crowd at bay. Outnumbered by residents and sensing that the situation was going out of control, Maina Curtorim police called for additional reinforcements from Margao, Cuncolim and Colva police stations as the surging crowd later turned violent, overturning a Maruti Gypsy and damaging two other cars and a motorcycle belonging to the accused Avinash Gunjekar and his family. The crowd later set the accused’s motorcycle on fire and damaged his restaurant.
Police lathi-charged the crowd late night when they tried to manhandle a police videographer filming the incident. Sub-divisional Magistrate, Margao Ajit Panchwadkar said the police had to use force to bring the situation under control as they tried to manhandle the videographer.
DySP Dinraj Govekar told The Goan at around 11 pm from the spot that the crowd was dispersed from the main road after the lathi-charge. The police, however, beefed up their presence at the spot.
