Latecomers made to pay fines at Rosary College

MARGAO

The Administrator and the Principal of Rosary College, Navelim have asserted that the College had initiated the drive to levy fines on students reporting late for classes in order to instill discipline as well as values of punctuality amongst the students.

They also pointed out that the exercise was implemented in the college after taking the parents of students into confidence.

After a video showing a security guard collecting fines from the students went viral, the duo clarified that the security guard was collecting the fines as per the instructions of the college management, issued in consultation with the parents.

The Principal said many students reporting late for classes came up with lame excuses.

“We started implementing the fines as told to the parents at the beginning of the academic year during an orientation programme. The security was collecting the fine for a particular day, wherein the students had to write their name and sign on a paper. The security man used to deposit the collection of the day with the accounts section and issue a receipt,” he said.

He, however, added that the receipt was not handed over to the students since the College had decided at the initial stage that the fines will be refunded back to the students.

“One good thing about the concept was the number of students reporting for classes dropped substantially,” the Principal said.
