President of the South Goa Advocates Association Adv Rajiv Gomes set fire to the copy of the Amendment Bill to the Advocates Act, saying the recommendations made by the Law Commission are draconian in nature, against the legal profession and against the independence of the lawyers. “The sanctity and independence of the entire legal education of the country is at stake due to the proosed amendments to the Advocates Act, 1961”, he told the media.
He said the amendments has proposed that the state Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India are to consist of persons like chartered accountants, architects, politicians, doctors etc to which the South Goa Advocates Association is vehemently opposed on grounds that these professionals have no knowledge or limited knowledge of law. “These professionals will be in a majority and would dominate the affairs of the State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India to the detriment of lawyers at large”, he said. He said the Law Commission has also recommended that Judicial officers shall be empowered with the authority to cancel the license of an Advocate on the grounds of contempt, serious misconduct, abstention etc, which is highly objectionable.
