The distribution of free LED bulbs at Sancoale was called off on Saturday much to the disappointment of the beneficiaries who had to wait for long hours, but had to return empty handed after the officials concerned failed to turn up.
When this correspondent visited the Shantadurga hall, which was the venue for the distribution of the bulbs, around hundreds of people were seen waiting in a queue.
“We were told that the bulbs would be distributed from 9 am onwards. But it is now 11 am and there is no sign of anyone,” Gaurish Naik from Mayar, told The Goan.
Another resident, Camilo Fernandes from Sailant, told The Goan that he was present as early as 7 am anticipating a queue, but his efforts had gone in vain.
Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha while expressing regrets over the development said that the agency which was awarded the job of handing over the bulbs to the consumers did not turn up.
“They perhaps did not have sufficient manpower. But I will ensure that the bulbs are distributed in orderly manner and I will choose the date and place for distribution of bulbs,” Saldanha told The Goan, adding that the beneficiaries would be given sufficient time to collect their bulbs.
