Litterbug tourists have free run at Colva beach on New Year day

MARGAO
Was consumption of liquor on the beach belt exempted on New Year's Day? It seemed so, if one visited Colva beach on Monday as New Year partying continued unabated on the world-famous beach where domestic tourists made merry by littering the coast, even as the men-in-uniform were conspicuous by their absence.
The Goan descended on the beach on Monday to do a ground check and was expectantly welcomed by groups of domestic tourists partying on the beach and all around
the coconut groves. No policemen were
seen around manning the beach to keep littering in check.
While cans of beers were seen littered on the beach, there were many others who consumed whisky and other alcoholic drinks with the authorities ostensibly taking a break after night long patrolling. Consumption of alcoholic drinks on the beaches stands banned, but looking at the real-time situation today it appeared that the ban on liquor consumption was exempted on New Year day.
Sources in the police department pointed out that the visitors may have had a free hand to do what they pleased on the beach after the police took a break from night-long patrolling on the beach belt and the roads leading to it.
However, a senior police officer told the Goan, "Security was tightened at Colva with deployment of policemen all along to the beach to keep miscreants at bay. New
Year celebrations passed off peacefully without any
major problem."

Otherwise, just consider this. From just 13 cases in 2016, the number of NDPS cases registered by police stations in South Goa has taken a quantum jump to 60 cases in 2017. Ganja seemed to be the major drug in circulation in South Goa as evident…
