It was a moment of high voltage action as King Momo and his Queen had to duck for safety to miss overhead electrical cables during the Vasco Carnival parade in Vasco on Monday evening.
While King Momo Shalom Sardinha and his Queen Jocelyn Godinho were leading the colourful Carnival float parade along the Swatantra Path, the overhead cables had to be pulled aside with wooden sticks before the float could go ahead.
While the King Shalom Sardinha ducked for safety, his Queen Jocelyn Godinho along with others had to almost sit to avoid coming in contact with the overhead electrical cables.
Though the king and queen laughed it off and took it in light spirit before continuing to sway to the music, the incident highlighted a long pending-demand of Vascokars of having underground cabling in the city.
The Carnival and Shigmo parades every year face the issue of overhead cables which need to be constantly pushed aside to allow the floats to pass through along the Swatantra Path, endangering the lives of people.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida had recently taken up the issue with Power Minister Nilesh Cabral while MMC Councilor Krishna Salkar had also written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in this connection.
It may be recalled that Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida had told reporters that
Power Minister Nilesh Cabral had assured to take up underground cabling soon.
“We may complete the underground cabling works in the next two years. Overhead wires get entangled with floats for Carnival and Shigmo, especially along the Swatantra Path road,” Almeida had said.
In his letter to CM Pramod Sawant, MMC Councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar had stated that during cultural festivals held on the road, the floats faced a dangerous task of avoiding live overhead wires and had also strongly requested the need for an underground
cabling system.
