CANACONA
The final rites of Nami Gaonkar of Gulem (Canacona) and Barkelo Gaonkar of Barsem-Gokuldem (Quepem), the two pump attendants who died in a well at a petrol pump in Canacona, were performed on Saturday.
The bodies of both Nami Gaonkar and Barkelo Gaonkar were handed over to their respective relatives after a post-mortem examination at the district hospital in Margao. While the body of Nami was cremated at Gulem, the body of Barkelo was cremated at Barcem-Gokuldem, with family, relatives, neighbours and friends gathering in large numbers.
The people who gathered at both places demanded a thorough investigation into the deaths of the two pump attendants.
According to Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas, the post-mortem report has come and the cause of death was due to drowning (asphyxia). LPSI Rifa Barretto is conducting further enquiries under the guidance of Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas.
Incidentally, people in the locality have been surprised with the post-mortem report and claimed that both Nami Gaonkar and Barkelo Gaonkar were good swimmers and could not have drowned in the well, especially it did not have much water.
Nami Gaonkar is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son, Barkelo Gaonkar from Gokuldem (Quepem) is survived by his wife and two daughters.
