Residents of Varkhand-Nagzar have voiced concern over large-scale land purchases by non-Goans in the Mopa Airport area.
Raising the issue at the Gram Sabha chaired by Sarpanch Gauri Josalkar on Sunday, the residents complained that constructions are illegally taking place without taking any permission from the Panchayat. They insisted that the panchayat takes action against such constructions.
The issue of wine shops in the panchayat area and development works were also discussed. They also demanded an inquiry into the newly constructed road at Varkhand, which is in a bad state. The residents also wanted to know if the panchayat is aware of ongoing government works in the area.
There was a suggestion to construct a new project in the old panchayat space to generate some revenue to the panchayat, but it was later revealed that the land had been transferred to the police department during the tenure of a former sarpanch.
It was also decided to stop vehicular traffic on the weakened bridge at Varkhand.
Among those present at the meeting included Deputy Sarpanch Vasant Naik and other panch members. The minutes of the previous Gram Sabha were read out by Varkhand Panchayat Secretary Mukund Ukshekar.
