A SHELTER NO MORE: The concrete rooftop of the bus shed at Karaswaddo lies on the ground after the structure collapsed in the early hours of Monday.

A concrete bus shed at Karaswaddo in Mapusa collapsed in the early hours of Monday, raising questions over the structural integrity of the structure and the circumstances leading to its sudden collapse.
The shed reportedly came crashing down in one go, leaving locals baffled as to how a concrete structure could collapse without any apparent external trigger.
While some residents suspect that the recent rains may have weakened the structure, the absence of heavy rainfall or strong winds has cast doubt on this explanation, prompting questions over whether there could have been other reasons behind the collapse.
The bus shed was regularly used by workers employed in various companies at the Karaswaddo Industrial Estate, particularly those waiting for public transport.
Taking note of the incident, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Kaushik Desai said the council would seek the Public Works Department's intervention to ascertain the cause of the collapse.
“We will write to the PWD to look into the details and conduct an inquiry into the sudden collapse of the shed,” Desai said.
The inquiry is expected to establish whether structural defects, poor construction or other factors contributed to the collapse.
