5 pits to be constructed at a cost of around Rs 1.6 lakh

CANACONA The Loliem-Polem panchayat in Canacona has taken up water harvesting projects to conserve groundwater in the village.According to panch and ex-sarpanch Ajay Lolienkar, Loliem-Polem village has undertaken the task to construct five water harvesting pits at Madditolop, Galier-Pedem, Tanshi, Nr S S Angle Higher Secondary School and Pedem at a cost of around Rs 1.6 lakh under the MNREGA.On Saturday, Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes inspected ongoing works at a few places and commended the panchayat for utilising MNREGA funds to preserve groundwater, which he said, had been depleting in recent times and lower water levels were noticeable in private wells and other water sources.Loliem-Polem Sarpanch Nishant Prabhudessai along with ex-sarpanch and panch Ajay Lolienkar and panch Sachin Naik also accompanied Fernandes during his inspection of the water pits being constructed to harvest water.“The projects are being implemented with the guidance and support of our MLA with the sole intention to preserve groundwater in the village,” Prabhudessai said.
