Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has written to Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju seeking a Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly with at least 15 sittings, saying several pressing public issues require detailed discussion and legislative scrutiny.
In his letter, Alemao expressed concern over what he termed the government's failure to re-summon the Assembly after the previous session, the Budget session was cut short in view of election code that came into force due to the Ponda by-polls that were subsequently cancelled. He recalled that he had earlier written to the Governor on April 9, 2026, seeking the immediate re-summoning of the House and said the matter still remained unresolved.
Alemao pointed out that the Budget session, originally scheduled from March 6 to March 27, was curtailed after only seven sittings and that the Budget was also passed without discussion.
He argued that the justification was unacceptable, noting that legislative business in other states continued despite similar election-related restrictions.
"The premature suspension deprived the Opposition of its rightful opportunity to raise pressing issues affecting the people of Goa," Alemao said.
He stressed that the upcoming Monsoon Session should provide sufficient time to debate matters of public importance, including the Sarvan-Karapur issue, the impact of Section 39-A of the Town and Country Planning Act, unemployment, deteriorating law and order, rising inflation and concerns affecting students.
Alemao said that the Assembly also needs to deliberate on crucial legislation aimed at safeguarding Goa's land resources, environment, demography and identity, which remained unattended after the previous session was curtailed.
