Polling for the Zilla Panchayat elections in the Sancoale and Cortalim constituencies of Mormugao taluka on Saturday recorded a relatively low turnout, a factor that could spring surprises when the results are declared.
The Cortalim ZP constituency witnessed voting by 9,935 electors out of a total electorate of 17,443, taking the final turnout to 56.96 per cent. Of those who cast their votes, 4,350 were male voters while 5,585 were female voters.
In Sancoale, polling was comparatively higher, with 18,176 voters exercising their franchise of a total of 29,405 electors. This translated into a turnout of 63.99 per cent, with 9,223 male voters and 8,953 female voters participating in the polling process.
Local analysts said the lower-than-expected turnout in both constituencies could potentially upset calculations of candidates contesting from Sancoale and Cortalim, especially in closely fought segments.
Political observers noted that subdued participation often leads to unexpected outcomes, particularly where margins are traditionally narrow.
Despite the modest turnout, the polling process across Mormugao taluka remained peaceful.
No untoward incidents, clashes between voters, or confrontations among supporters of political parties were reported from any polling station.
Police personnel were deployed at all booths, with additional strength stationed at polling centres identified as sensitive to ensure smooth conduct of the election.
However, locals felt that the polling progressed at a slower pace as the elections were conducted using ballot papers.
At several polling stations, voters were seen waiting for extended periods before casting their votes, especially during peak hours.
