MARGAO: A rusted electric pole came crashing down on the main Benaulim road after the Khareband bridge on Thursday noon, bringing to fore the failure of the authorities to lift away the unused and corroded poles along the road sides.

Eyewitnesses pointed out that the pole came down when there was no movement of vehicular traffic along the busy road.

Power officials were not available for comment to get the status of the poles standing along the road side, but sources said these poles have remained unused for some time.

The pole that has come down on the road was totally corroded. An eyewitness said only a cable, not electric, was found tied on the pole.

“It’s a sheer miracle that the pole has not come down on any motorists or pedestrians. This should come as an eye opener for the power department to lift away all the unused poles”, demanded a local resident from Benaulim.
