Agitated residents of Madel-Margao on Friday called on the District Collector, Dr Sachin Shinde, seeking his intervention in respect of the sewage problem staring at their ward since the last few days.

A delegation of the residents drew attention of the district collector to the fact that the entire sewerage line passing through the ward is not functioning, posing a health hazard to the local inhabitants. "The sewer manholes are choked and the sewage is not flowing to the treatment plant but is clogged within the manholes and due to this at some places, specially within the residential complexes, the sewage is overflowing at the main chamber that connects to the Maddel sewerage link,” the residents said.

They further pointed that the complaints lodged with the sewerage department Works Division XXI, (PHE) PWD, Margao, has failed to solve the problem. “Many times, the engineers are not attending to our calls and also are not found present in their offices,” the residents said, while condemning the lethargic attitude of the department.

“Due to the sewage stagnation in the sewers, the sewage has peculated in the ground water and drinking water wells are polluted and rendered unfit for use,” the residents said, requesting the district collector to instruct the concerned sewerage department and other departments to take necessary actions in the matter and solve the problem, including the stinking wholesale fish market problem, at the earliest.

After giving the residents a patient hearing, the district collector has promised to issue necessary instructions to the concerned officials.
