Mahajans oppose land allotment for cricket stadium in Canacona
A group of mahajans from the Shri Mallikarjun Devasthan submit a petition to Canacona Mamlatdar and Temple Administrator Gajesh P Shirodkar.

CANACONA

A group of 32 Mahajans of the Shri Mallikarjuna Temple in Shristhal-Canacona have petitioned Canacona Mamlatdar and Temple Administrator Gajesh P Shirodkar to stop the allotment of Devasthan land to a local cricket club to construct a cricket stadium.

Alleging a conspiracy is being hatched to grab temple land in the name of sports, the group of Mahajans, including a former Shri Mallikarjun Devasthan committee president and ex-committee members, accused the present Devasthan committee of planning to allot 40,000 sq. mtrs of land in Faskalli in Canacona municipality to a club.

The memorandum also states that Shri Mallikarjun Devasthan committee in its meeting on July 27 had decided to allot the land to a cricket club for the construction of a cricket stadium.

Alleging that the club will pay very low and negligible rent to the Devasthan, the aggrieved Mahajans claimed that this is a hidden agenda to grab land in the name of sports and a thorough investigation should be conducted into the matter.

The signatories to the petition include former president of Shri Mallikarjun Devasthan Vithoba Desai, ex-executive committee members Anil Naik Gaonkar, Prakash Desai, Mahableshwar Desai.

Copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to the governor and chief minister.
