Mahila Congress, the women’s wing of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, on Saturday demanded that the prices of coconuts, which will be sold by the State
government at subsidised prices, be reduced from Rs 20 to Rs 10.
Stating that Mahila Congress since the last two weeks has managed to sell coconuts at prices ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 15 without any resources available, Pratima Coutinho said, “Sardesai is a part of the government and has the entire mechanism. So why can’t the government sell coconuts at subsidised rates of Rs 10 per coconut.”
Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai on Friday had announced that the State government will provide 30 coconuts per household at subsidised rates of Rs 20 per coconut at the outlets of Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited.
Coutinho however threatened that they would begin with the protest once again if the State government failed to come out with the prices of coconuts based on their sizes.
