The issue of malfunctioning traffic signal lights at Santa Cruz-Merces highway junction was highlighted at the Merces gram sabha on Sunday.

The issue was raised after a local from Merces succumbed to his injuries suffered in an accident at the junction on Saturday. “The traffic signals sometimes do not function resulting in mishaps,” the villagers opined and urged the panchayat authorities to write to the department concerned to maintain the traffic signals.

The works proposed under the gram panchayat development plan (GPDP) were also placed before the gram sabha. The villagers have been asked to submit their proposals so that the same could be incorporated into the plan.

The villagers also passed a resolution declaring the village as tobacco and smoke free as per the direction issued by the Directorate of Panchayats.  The sabha, however, ended very early as very few villagers participated.
