A man believed to be deranged is reported to have attacked policemen and damaged a police car at Advai-Kumbharwada in Bhironda-Sattari taluka on Friday.
According to sources, the person, Keshav Kunkalkar, was found making a loud noise at home on Thursday night.
On Friday morning, he was seen moving in the area with a knife and this alarmed people in the area. Some made efforts to stop and pacify him, but they were afraid he would charge and cause them harm.
Keshav’s brother, Sanjeev, tried to stop him and take away the knife but Keshav is alleged to have wounded Sanjeev, causing him minor injuries.
Fearing that Keshav would cause further harm, locals then notified the Valpoi police.
A police team went to the site, but Keshav went on a rampage and charged at the police, hurling stones at them. He also damaged the police car (GA-07-G-1637) by smashing all windows and windscreens of the vehicle, while also deflating the tyres.
As the situation was going out of hand, Valpoi Police Inspector Prajyot Phadte, PSI Sneha Gavas and a police team overpowered Keshav and arrested him. Sanjeev sustained some injuries during his rampage and is undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
