A pair of Olive Ridley turtles died after they got entangled in a piece of fishing net and were washed ashore at Agonda beach on Friday.
According to sources, the male and female Olive Ridley turtles were found severely injured after getting entangled in a piece of the fishing net at Agonda beach.
Some beach cleaning women rescued the two Olive Ridley turtles from the knee-deep water with the help of some locals and brought them ashore.
The two Olive Ridley turtles were later released from the fishing net and locals then alerted forest officers from the Pisonnem range at Padi.
The forest officers took the two injured Olive Ridley turtles for treatment, but sources at the Forest centre at Padi said the turtles died due to the extensive injuries they had sustained.
“It is unclear for how long the two Olive Ridley turtles had been entangled in the fishing net. The injuries they had sustained were very serious and they died while being treated,” informed a forest source.
It may be recalled that a green sea turtle had got entangled in a fishing net off Palolem beach coast in mid-September last year. It was provided with treatment by a veterinary officer for minor injuries and forest department officials later released the turtle back into the sea.
