PONDA
It took an alert passerby and not the sleeping guard to foil an attempt by a youth from Mangalore to burgle an ATM near the Maruti Temple at Warkhande-Ponda in the wee hours of Saturday.
The accused, Mohammed Hanif Yusuf (22) was later arrested in this connection.
According to sources, Yusuf was caught red-handed with screw drivers and other instruments, while attempting to pry open the upper panel of the ATM to access the money loaded into the machine.
Sources said the security guard deployed at the ATM was asleep far away from the ATM, enabling Yusuf to attempt the burglary.
However, he banged on the ATM and the noise was picked up by a woman passing by and she alerted the security guard. The accused was then nabbed at the site.
The accused was working at a chicken centre since the last five months and is believed to have been aware of breaking open ATMs, given the equipment found in his possession.
DySP Sunita Sawant informed The Goan that the incident had occurred in the wee hours of Saturday. "The accused person was nabbed red-handed at the ATM and we are investigating the case," said DySP Sawant.
It may be recalled that burglars had stolen an ATM machine from Usgao last month and while one person was arrested in this case, there has been no further breakthrough in the matter. Police is investigating if the accused arrested on Saturday morning had any links to the Usgao ATM burglary. He has been remanded to three days in custody.
An offence has been registered under Sections 380, 511 and 427 of IPC and PSI Nitin Halankar is investigating the case.
