Mangalore-based firm offers to resolve issue

MARGAO

With no solution in sight at Sonsodo, a Mangalore-based company has offered to resolve the waste imbroglio plaguing the commercial capital.

Company officials made a presentation on the waste treatment project aimed at treating the dry waste via incineration and the wet waste through a bio-digester.

The entire project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 16 crore, is proposed to be executed on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with the Mangalore-based company offering to invest 60 per cent of the project cost and the balance to be borne by the civic body.

“The company has only made an initial offer to set up the bio-digester at the existing shed to treat the daily wet waste. An incinerator is proposed to be set up outside the shed which will take care of the dry waste. The fuel generated out of the two processes will be converted into electricity”, informed a senior MMC official.

The official pointed out that the company has promised to avail the Central government subsidy amounting to 30 per cent of the project cost.

“The project mooted by the company is still at a discussion stage. It will be placed before the council meeting before any decision is taken on the project”, the official said, adding that the elected body would take a call on the proposal.
