Sandeep Manjrekar has been elected unopposed as the new sarpanch of Socorro. The post had fallen vacant after former sarpanch Sanjay Pednekar had resigned last fortnight citing personal reasons.
The Mapusa Block Development Office had convened a special meeting in the panchayat office on Thursday to elect a new sarpanch.
Nine panch members, Deputy Sarpanch Reshma Morajkar, Sandeep Manjrekar, Sanjay Pednekar, Dittosa Lobo, Sheetal Arolker, Maya Keni, Ravlu Parsekar, Kirti Kudnekar and Dipali Satardekar were present at the meeting. Panch members Sandeep Vazarkar and Anil Pednekar did not attend the meeting.
Since there was only one nomination, presiding officer Shirishkumar Tari declared Sandeep Manjrekar elected unopposed. Tari was assisted by the panchayat secretary Satish Gauns.
Later speaking to reporters, newly elected sarpanch Sandeep Manjrekar assured to strive to complete pending development works in Socorro village with the support and guidance of Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte.
