MAPUSA
Taking a big leap, Mapusa Municipal Council has decided to go for geographic information system (GIS)-based mapping of structures in the city.
Chief Officer, Clen Madeira said the main purpose to have GIS mapping was to know the exact number of structures in the city which will help to curb illegalities in future.
“All physical structures on the ground like houses, buildings, shanties will be mapped. Through GIS mapping we will come to know the present area occupied by a structure as well as the area occupied by the structure before the survey,” Madeira said.
GIS is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyse, manage and present all types of geographical data.
The chief officer said many times in a survey plan there may be a structure of 100 sq mts. Later the owner expands it to 200 sq mts which is not marked on the survey plan.
“This will not happen or if it happens the illegality will easily come to the notice of the authorities once GIS mapping is in place,” he said.
The chief officer said that St Xavier’s College, Mapusa has agreed to conduct the survey to prepare the GIS mapping of the city for free.
According to Urban Development Minister and Mapusa MLA, Francisco D’Souza, if St Xavier’s College takes up the proposal, Mapusa municipality will save at least Rs 40 lakh.
“We have asked St Xavier’s College to do GIS mapping for the whole of Mapusa. They have agreed to do it for us free. So we will save around Rs 40 lakh,” D’Souza said.
The Mapusa MLA said GIS mapping will help officials to sit in the municipality and look at the whole town without going to the site.
“Once GIS mapping is done it will be very easy to locate each and every house. Recovery and stopping illegal construction will become easy,” he added.
