Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Priya Mishal has resigned following an agreement with the ruling group to serve a one-year term.
The MMC Vice-Chairperson Viraj Phadke is also expected to resign from his post. Nutan Bicholkar is likely to take over as chairperson, while Sushant Harmalkar will be her deputy.
Eleven of the 14 councillors of the ruling group had convened a meeting with Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza in the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon. Mishal later submitted her resignation following the meeting.
“The BJP and the Mapusa MLA entrusted me with the responsibility of being the mayor. I tried to do justice to this post and got an opportunity to serve residents of Mapusa. It has been an honour for me and I will continue to work for the ward as well as Mapusa city,” said Mishal.
