MAPUSA
While Mapusa has witnessed a sudden spurt in dengue cases, the Mapusa civic body appeared to actually contribute to the menace by allowing its backyard to be a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Journalists on their routine round in the Mapusa municipality on Friday suddenly stumbled on a large number of tyres and other scrap behind the civic building with rainwater accumulated in them.
In an attempt to defend the municipality, Mapusa Vice Chairperson, Chandrashekar Benkar said the civic body could not remove the material from the area due to heavy rain.
“Just yesterday we had a meeting along with the local MLA and the chairperson where it was decided to shift all the tyres and other scrap material to another place,” Benkar said.
As the news about the municipality’s embarrassment filtered out, health officials attached to the Mapusa Urban Health Centre rushed to the municipality and ensured that all the scrap material was emptied of water and the scrap shifted.
