SWACHH BHARAT GOES FOR A TOSS: For more than three days the Mapusa Municipal Council has failed to collect waste in a prime area at Morod, Mapusa which is surrounded by several apartments.

MAPUSA

The ongoing saga of garbage accumulation in various open areas within Mapusa persists unabated, despite concerted efforts by the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) to address the issue.

Waste continues to be dumped indiscriminately at numerous black spots scattered across the town, posing a significant challenge to civic authorities.

In recent days, the MMC has faltered in its waste collection duties, exacerbating the problem further.

Particularly notorious is a location near the old Asilo building and adjacent to the tempo stand, where heaps of refuse have been left unattended for an extended period.

Residents, already perturbed by the unsightly mess, are voicing their frustrations.

A resident of Marjorie apartment, situated in the vicinity, lamented the situation, stating, "This garbage is not collected for the last three days and it has created a stink in the area. The municipality collects it on one day and fails to turn up for the next three days."

She emphasized the detrimental impact on the quality of life, asserting, "It’s not only people from Mapusa but people from surrounding villages who also dump waste here. We cannot live in this mess."

Moreover, the crisis extends beyond recent events, with reports indicating that certain waste dumps have remained uncleared for months. Sources reveal that the MMC is facing logistical challenges, including a shortage of trucks and manpower, hindering its ability to address the mounting garbage problem effectively.

Efforts to seek clarification from MMC Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar and Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar proved unsuccessful.

The persistent garbage crisis in Mapusa underscores the need for comprehensive waste management strategies and prompt intervention to alleviate the burden on residents and safeguard public health and the environment.
