Mapusa civic body’s re-assessment of house tax to commence from Dec 1

The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will take up the work of re-assessment of house tax in all 20 wards within the jurisdiction of the municipal area from the beginning of the next month.

The civic body has engaged the services of ten senior civic officials under whom a team has been constituted who will move in different wards and physically verify the size of residential houses/flats/commercial establishments in all the 20 wards.

“As per the provision under section 120 of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968, this council is going to take up the work of re-assessment of house tax for the block of four years from 2023 to 2027 from December 1 this year,” said Amitesh Shirvoikar, Chief Officer of MMC.

In a public notice, the chief officer has appealed to the residents to cooperate with the civic officials who have been engaged for the re-assessment work.

Chairperson of MMC, Shubhangi Vaigankar informed that a team of civic officials will visit individual houses, flats and commercial units to verify the size of the built up area.

“The officials will verify if any individuals have carried out extension to their houses or commercial units. The task also entails to verify and collate data of people who have given rooms on rent within this municipal jurisdiction,” she said.

“Illegal houses on private and comunidade land will also be assessed,” she added.

She, however, said that the main market area will be spared from the re-assessment activity and will be taken up separately.

According to the chairperson, the decision to whether hike the house tax or not will be taken up by the council at a later date.

The assessment of house tax has to be conducted every four years but in Mapusa the assessment work was not carried out nearly for the last 10 years. The last re-assessment work was carried out in 2014.
