Mapusa market and several other areas in the town came under water even as incidents of trees falling were reported from several places.
Some areas in Khorlim were flooded yet again due to the heavy downpour that lasted for more than an hour. “It was yesterday once again as water from the hills came gushing down and flooding roads near the Usapkar junction in Khorlim,” said Adv Mahesh Rane, a resident from the area.
He squarely blamed the Mapusa Municipal Council for failing to learn lessons when the area was flooded in the first rains on May 31.
MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar and Municipal Engineer Hussain Shah Muzawar visited the areas that were flooded in Khorlim and instructed the civic staff to take corrective measures.
Admitting to the flooding, Kavlekar said the civic body has taken corrective measures to alleviate the
problem of the locals in the area.
“Part of the nullah in the upper regions of Khorlim repaired by the Water Resources Department has become broad on top, but it becomes narrow when it reaches down and the rainwater which comes gushing down spills over and floods the area,” Kavlekar said.
He said the MMC has written to the WRD which will inspect the nullah next week.
Mapusa’s famed Friday market turned a dampener for visitors as several areas in the market came under water.
Many shoppers were put to hardships as they had
to negotiate their way through lanes submerged in rainwater.
Part of the road in Gaunsavaddo was also flooded, while some boulders came down the hill near the Mapusa cemetery area.
Fire station officials informed that tree falling incidents were reported from several areas in the morning.
A gulmohar tree fell on the road near Colvale jail, Carraswaddo, while another tree falling incident was reported from Khalap Waddo in Canca.
A mango tree fell at Saliswaddo, Parra, snapping power lines in the area.
“There was no much damage due to falling of trees, but power was interrupted for several hours in the many areas,” a fire official said.
