Votes sealed, aspirants await their fate

The fate of village satraps and new comers from Salcete countryside has been finally sealed on Sunday even as polling for the 33 village Panchayats in Salcete taluka was by and large peaceful, barring two minor incidents of assault at Curtorim and Manora-Raia.

The fate of over a dozen sitting and former Sarpanchas, present and former panchas from Salcete will be known on Tuesday as the encouraging voter turnout has left many a candidate to keep their fingers crossed. Amongst the prominent sitting and former sarpanchas in the fray includes Benaulim Sarpanch Remy Fernandes, Menino Fernandes (Colva), Joseph Vaz (Rachol), Santos Rebello (Chinchinim) etc.
Returning Officer Manoj Korgaonkar told The Goan that elections were by and large peaceful in most parts of Salcete, barring minor incidents. He said that most of the complaints pertained to slow pace of polling, which was later rectified by deputing additional polling officials to the concerned booths.
The voter turn out revealed that voters braved the rains and inclement weather to cast their vote at most of the polling booths in Salcete. Records indicate that the Rumdamol and Assolna village panchayats recorded the lowest poll percentage in the first two hours of polling with many attributing the situation to the heavy early morning showers, while Seraulim recorded the highest percentage during this period.
