Mapusa council gears up for pay parking near sub-registrar office

Move expects to reduce traffic chaos in the area

MAPUSA
The traffic chaos witnessed near the Mapusa sub-registrar office will soon be history, as the Mapusa civic body has decided to implement pay parking in the area.
Since the building housing the sub-registrar office is close to the Mapusa market there is heavy movement of vehicles in the area which often leads to traffic chaos.
Very often, large goods vehicles are seen stationed in the open space, at times for the whole day, thereby denying parking opportunity for other motorists.
Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said the traffic mess at the Essar Complex, which houses the sub-registrar office, creates a lot of inconvenience to people.
According to the chairperson, most of the heavy vehicles parked in the open space do so to unload goods to various shops in the market.
“It has been found that these vehicles park at the spot at times for the entire day. Pay parking will restore some order in the area and bring relief to people visiting there,” Kavlekar said.
The council gave its sanction to the move after the chairperson placed the demand of converting the area into pay parking.
It was decided to make separate parking lots “ one for light motor vehicles and another one for heavy vehicles.
“Besides allotting separate space for heavy vehicles, we also need to charge extra parking fee for the heavy goods vehicles,” said Sandip Falari.
In another decision, the council resolved to discontinue pay parking inside the main market until the roads inside the market were hot-mixed.
The chairperson said that the roads will soon be taken up for hot-mixing and after that pay parking could be reintroduced in the area.
