The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) in a unanimous decision gave a go ahead to set up composter plants at three locations within the municipal jurisdiction. The council also decided to utilise solar power by installing a solar power system for the vegetable shed and fish market.
MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza informed a special council meeting on Friday that the city generated around 20 tonnes of wet garbage on a daily basis. He said the Director of Municipal Administration has approved the setting up of “In-Vessel” composter plants at different locations around the city.
“The In-Vessel composter plants are composters of smaller capacity which will treat 1 or 2 tonnes of wet waste per day using suitable technology,” Braganza said.
He said Mapusa will be the first municipality in the state to use such In-Vessel composter plants.
The council decided to install three such plants in the market, Camarkhazan (near the sewage treatment plant) and Cunchelim.
Senior councilor Sandeep Falari said the council should simultaneously agree to do the civil works of constructing sheds at the sites.
The council also decided to set up solar power system at the vegetable shed and the fish market under the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) scheme.
The chairperson informed that the installation of solar power system was a one-time investment and the Goa government was offering 25 per cent subsidy on the project.
Stating that switching to solar power was a good initiative, councillor, Sandeep Falari said the municipality building and flower market solar power work could also be taken up along with the vegetable and fish market.
“We can club all these places in one package instead of going through the process of applying multiple times,” Falari said.
In another decision, the council resolved to obtain administrative approval and expenditure sanction for the first floor of the KTC shopping complex.
The chairperson informed the council that three families living in the PWD quarters have agreed to temporarily shift to another place so that renovation work can be taken up of the dilapidated flats.
