With an aim to create awareness against use of plastic, the Mapusa Municipal Council in collaboration with some schools in Mapusa will organize a rally in the city on October 1.

Students from various schools will converge in front of the Mapusa municipality building from where the rally will be flagged off at around 8 am.

Mapusa Municipal Council, Chairperson Ryan Braganza along with other councilors will flag off the rally, which will then wind its way through the city streets.

“We all know that plastic is bad and it’s chocking our environment. We all want to stop use of plastic and for that we need the cooperation of each and every citizen. This rally is just one small step to create awareness among the society that plastic is bad and we need to do something about it,” Braganza told The Goan.

He said the council will take a series of such little steps to prepare the minds of different section of the society like the student community, parents, shop keepers, consumers etc against the use of plastic.

The council in a recent council meeting has made up its mind to distribute cloth bags among 18,000 households, as part of the anti-plastic awareness campaign.

It has been held up on account of lack of funds.

The council is expected to soon hold a special meeting to firm up the decision.

“The council is very firm to ban use of plastic bags in the city. We are moving steadily in that direction and in a month’s time we expect to put a system in place where an alternative is made available to people,” the chairperson said.
