Tension prevailed at Narkasur celebrations in Sada on Monday night, after a group was denied permission to organise the event at the last moment.

According to sources, Mormugao United claimed to have been holding Aakash Kandil and Narkasur competitions since the last 10 years.

The Mormugao United organisers had applied for permission to host the Aakash Kandil and Narkasur competitions on October 24 and had widely publicized the event.

On November 2, they went to the deputy collector who directed them to the Collector’s office in Margao.

Accordingly, the Mormugao United organisers went to the Collector’s office on Monday, where they were informed that another person had also applied for permission to hold a similar event at the site.

Since two events could not be held at the same place in view of law and order issues, both applications were rejected.

The last-minute denial of permission did not go down well with the Mormugao United organisers and they were determined to go ahead with their celebration.

Anticipating tension amid anger among both groups in view of the permission denied to them, police teams were stationed at different points at the entry to Sada.

In the meanwhile, Mormugao United organisers set up a stage and loud music was played at the event till Monday night.

Mormugao DySP Sunita Sawant, Mormugao PI Shailesh Narvekar, Verna PI Ninad Deulkar, officials from the Mamlatdar office and a strong police force rushed to the site and directed the Mormugao United organisers to stop the celebration since they did not have permission to hold the event.

One of the organisers was defiant and insisted that the celebration would continue as planned and was even willing to be arrested, if needed.
