Mapusa hockey stadium to be named after Major Dhyan Chand: CM

Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant on Sunday announced that the new hockey stadium in Peddem, Mapusa will be named after India’s sporting legend Major Dhyan Chand.

“The hockey stadium that is coming up in Mapusa will be named after Major Dhyan Chand Singh. The stadium will be for the hockey players and the youth of Goa and India and it will be one of the best stadiums in the country,” Sawant said.

The chief minister was addressing the youth during the Fit India Run 2.0 event organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra, North Goa and Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs of Goa at Ravindra Bhavan in Sankhelim.

The country celebrates National Sports Day on August 29 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand who is regarded as one of the greatest hockey players India has produced.

Continuing, Sawant said the National Games which was supposed to happen in Goa has been postponed for some reasons but it will take place in the State in the near future.

“We have erected one of the best sports infrastructure in the State keeping in mind the National Games that are to be held in the State. Our indoor and outdoor stadiums are meant for all the youth of Goa,” he said.

The new hockey stadium with super turf at Peddem Sports Complex was developed for the 36th National Games to be held in the State.

The newly laid hockey turf has also received certification from the International Hockey Federation.
