MAPUSA: Having been parents of two sons, the burden of looking after a third child apparently led the husband-wife duo to abandon the one-day-year old infant in a garage in Mapusa, police said.
Both parents of the infant, who was abandoned more than a week back, were arrested by Mapusa Police on Thursday morning at Vasco Railway Station.
The father, Girish Shaha (30) and mother, Mala (29) of the abandoned child have been sent to police custody.
Police informed that they were originally from Aurangabad but residing in Goa for quite some time and presently putting up at Sangolda.
The man was a taxi driver and the woman is a housewife.
According to police, the child was delivered in the North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa and was discharged the very next day.
“When we rescued the abandoned child and took it to the district hospital for a checkup, the staff on duty recognized the child,” PI Kapil Nayak informed.
“An argument ensued among the husband and wife over the expenses of taking care of the third child and in a fit of rage, the mother left the child in the garage,” he said and further disclosed that both have admitted to the commission of the crime.
The PI informed after abandoning the child, the parents went into hiding and later left the State.
“On Thursday, we got a call that both the accused parents were arriving at the Vasco railway station. We rushed to the station and laid a trap and as soon as they got down at the platform we apprehended them and brought to the Mapusa police station,” the PI said.
He said blood samples of both the parents and the child have been collected and sent for DNA analysis.
Mapusa Police is investigating further.
